...t hat something just doesn’t quite add up?

Guy calls me from a Utah area code, no caller ID other than “Salt Lake City”, asking for a “behind the axle” fuel tank and already had a VIN ready (NO ONE has their VIN ready when calling , unless they’ve been playing the system ).

Kinja'd!!!

THIS VIN.

Kinja'd!!!

From THIS TRUCK.

Obviously there’s something fishy going on, which is why I googled the VIN after telling him the price of the tank and getting the response “Oh, that’s not bad, I could pay that... (long pause) I will call you back, can I have the part number please?” and found this auction listing.

Again. Felt fishy.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

Now is this someone that bought the truck and is restoring it, or salvaging it for parts? Why does he need JUST the auxiliary fuel tank?

Maybe needs a fuel tank to help burn the back half?

Don’t act like I haven’t memorized the last 7 digits of both my VINs.

Sounds like he was checking to see what he should sell parts of the truck for..

FWIW, I only call the parts counter with part numbers. Our conversations usually go:

“Hi”

“Hi, I’d like 3x of 11111-11111 and 5x of 22222-22222.”

“Ok, see you on Thursday.”

It makes it really easy when you need to order something for the cars.

I was at the BMW dealer getting a recall done on my M3, and I asked about the 3 as well. The service rep asked me if I knew my VIN. I was like yeah.

That... that might actually be it. But why call ME from UTAH? Silly people...

I wish they were all that easy. I just had to argue with a guy that the ONLY BATTERY SHOWN for his Grand Cherokee was the right one no matter what the internet says.

I have a cell phone area code from 1000 miles away from where I live too.

Oh, it’s invaluable. Having worked at a parts counter for a Honda outboard dealer, I know the value of your serial number. Someone would ask for a fuel filter (very common of course) for a Honda 25 and I’d say “what’s your serial number?” They would always be shocked, but you know what part they changed the design of, like 5 times, in the 20+ year run of engines that look mostly the same? You guessed it.
